Project 06: Wimbledon All England Lawn and Tennis Club

Tennis Sculpture ‘Grandslam’. Four tennis players in wire mesh by internationally renowned sculptor David Begbie. A permanent art installation - dramatically bathed in rich blue and gold light.

The composition of wire mesh with light and shadow creates a theatrical statement. A variety of spotlights,  controlled by an automatic control system, rhythmically fade in and out to render a sense of movement that evokes the play of tennis.  Shadows draw forward and fade away in a slow motion performance.  In the evening the stairwell and sculpture is lit in blue light giving the sculptural form a ghost like theatrical quality.

The play of shadow and light against sculptural form brings a sense of wonder to a busy stair core.
